DISASTER RELIEF
We The Social Assistance Institution ( SAI ) have distributed tents and essencial food items to 2000 families in Kumirmari , chotomollakhali islands, Sonagoan village & also ran a community kitchen in kumirmari for 400 Yaas effected people for one month .
In 2020 May sundarban was hit by the cyclone Amphan that displaced thousands of people. Yaas also caused similar devastation to Sundarban islands in May 2021. Due to tremendous tidal waves most villages in Sundarbans was flooded. Saline water had damaged mud huts, cattle’s and other animals floated away causing damage to livelihood. Yaas coupled with persistent covid situation has caused job losses everywhere in Sundarbans. About 15 lacs people have been affected according to government estimates.
The effect of cyclone "Yaas" was devastating and as a result residents of the sundarban area have lost their houses, farm land, cattle etc., almost like they have losted their livelihood. Under such conditions, SAI has taken an initiative on reforming local ponds of around fifty families. As a result, localities can store the fresh rain water if the existing salty water (mainly caused by Yaas) is removed by pumping. Following up on this, fish seedlings of different kinds of fish will be served to them for earning their livelihood. Especially in such an area this profession is essential and very useful for daily household needs.
Moreover, SAI also planned tree plantations of mango, guava, papaya as these were completely washed away by the cyclone and mostly due to influx of salt water. Thus, such initiative not only compensate for the loss but also increase the natural beauty of these affected areas.
